Our Story

A story that began with a promise made on a lake

Roaster Coaster Logo

Fresh Coffee – Craft Beer – Good Life

Craft Bear

Craft Bear -

Fresh Coffee, Craft Beer, Good Life.

Where It Began

In 2012, I was kayaking with a good friend on a lake near the source of Asahidake's spring water. We stopped in the middle of the lake, a hip flask appeared, and we talked about our dreams.

That's when I first heard about Roaster Coaster—his vision for a café that would roast its own coffee and serve craft beer, right here in Higashikawa at the foot of Hokkaido's highest peaks.

Carrying Forward

A year later, in 2013, he was gone—lost in an avalanche while skiing. The building renovation for Roaster Coaster had already begun.

Where his journey sadly stopped, I decided to pick up the trail. To put my own stamp on things whilst trying to preserve his dreams too.

On Roaster Coaster's logo, three words are written:
Fresh Coffee – Craft Beer – Good Life

The Coffee First

The coffee came first. Roasting out of the café, I developed Taisetsu Coffee—a brand built to take Higashikawa's coffee beyond our small mountain town.

Today, we supply over 60 retailers across Hokkaido and Honshu, and have shipped to individual customers in every prefecture in Japan.

But the other half of that logo—the craft beer—was always calling.

The Birth of ERBC

Once Taisetsu Coffee was thriving, and with the uncertainty of the pandemic settling in, it felt like the right time. I gathered a group of friends—all local business owners—and one by one invited them to join me on a craft beer journey.

Together, we established ERBC (合同会社ERBC) and developed our first beer: Higashikawa Ale.

Over the next two years, life happened. One by one, my partners stepped back—busy schedules, other commitments, the realities of running their own businesses. Eventually, I was on my own again.

Craft Bear Is Born

But I remembered the fire I felt building Taisetsu Coffee from nothing. That same passion returned.

With Higashikawa Ale as the flagship, I launched Craft Bear—a name that plays on words in the way I like, and connects to something deeply Hokkaido: our bears.

In 2024, we were granted registered trademarks—both for the Craft Bear name and for our logo: a bear holding a beer. A proud moment, and an important step in protecting what we've built.

Meet Craft Bear 🐻

Craft Bear - Hokkaido's craft beer brewing bear

Craft Bear was once just an ordinary bear, wandering the forests and mountains of Hokkaido. One early summer day, deep in the foothills, he made a curious discovery: campers had left behind some craft beer. That one sip changed everything.

Through the long winter hibernation, he couldn't forget that wonderful taste. In his dreams, a vision of opening his own brewery grew clearer and clearer.

When spring arrived, Craft Bear came down from the mountains with determination in his heart. First, he needed clothes. He found a blue work apron on a washing line and quietly "borrowed" it—very Paddington of him.

He saved his coins, wrote a business plan, and finally began brewing his dream beer using the pristine spring water from the Taisetsu mountains.

"The story of a bear who brews craft beer in rural Hokkaido, using clear air and delicious water."

The Water

That lake where we shared a drink and talked about dreams? It sits near the source of Asahidake's pristine spring water—filtered through volcanic rock over centuries.

We now use that same water in our beer. You can taste the mountains in every sip. Some things come full circle in ways you don't expect.

Our Beers

  • Higashikawa Ale Our flagship Session IPA (4.5%). Crisp, refreshing, endlessly drinkable. Named after home.
  • Northern Breeze A Hefeweizen (5%). Hazy and aromatic, with notes of banana and clove. Summer in a glass.
  • Black Rock Island Our award-winning Doppelbock (8%). Rich, malty, complex. Gold Medal winner. Named after the volcanic island rising from Hokkaido's waters.

How We Work

We're a small craft beer producer by choice. We partner with select breweries to bring our recipes to life, and work exclusively with restaurants, hotels, and retailers who share our commitment to quality.

There's one exception: Roaster Coaster—where it all began. On select evenings throughout the year, the café transforms into our taproom, where you can enjoy Craft Bear on draft. You can also pick up bottles there anytime. It's the only place to buy direct.

Beyond that? Wholesale only. Just carefully crafted beer, placed where it belongs. This focus allows us to do one thing well: create exceptional beer that carries the spirit of Higashikawa.

Full Circle

From a friend's dream to a café, from coffee beans to beer bottles—it's been a journey I never planned but wouldn't trade.

Roaster Coaster's logo promised three things:
Fresh Coffee, Craft Beer, Good Life.

We're finally delivering on all three.
