「地ビール」と「クラフトビール」。どちらもよく聞く言葉ですが、その違いをご存知でしょうか。実はこの二つ、指すものは近く、生まれた背景が異なります。
「地ビール」とは
1994年の酒税法改正で、ビール製造の最低数量基準が大きく引き下げられ、小規模な醸造所が各地に誕生しました。この頃に各地域で造られた個性的なビールが「地ビール」と呼ばれるようになりました。「ご当地」の意味合いが強い言葉です。
「クラフトビール」とは
2000年代以降、アメリカのクラフトビール文化の影響を受けて広まった言葉です。小規模で独立した造り手が、伝統や創意工夫を凝らして造るビールを指します。品質や造り手の姿勢に重きを置いたニュアンスがあります。
結局、何が違うのか
厳密な線引きはありません。大まかに言えば、同じような小規模醸造のビールを、かつては「地ビール」、今は「クラフトビール」と呼ぶことが多い、という違いです。呼び方が時代とともに変わってきた、と捉えるのが分かりやすいでしょう。

What is "Ji-beer"?
Japan's 1994 tax-law revision sharply lowered the minimum production volume for brewing beer, and small breweries sprang up across the country. The distinctive local beers made then came to be called "ji-beer" (local beer), with a strong regional connotation.
What is "Craft Beer"?
From the 2000s, the term "craft beer" spread under the influence of American craft beer culture. It refers to beer made by small, independent brewers with tradition and ingenuity — emphasising quality and the maker's ethos.
So What's the Difference?
There's no strict line. Broadly, the same small-batch beer that was once called "ji-beer" is now more often called "craft beer." It's easiest to see it as a change in terminology over time.
