There's something both exciting and terrifying about putting your name on official documents. This month, we took the leap and filed two trademark applications with the Japan Patent Office - one for our word mark "Craft Bear" and one for our logo design.
For a small brand from a small town, this felt like a big step. Until now, Craft Bear existed mostly through word of mouth, bottles passed between friends, and the occasional Instagram post. Filing for trademarks meant saying: "This is real. This is ours. We're serious about this."
The paperwork was... well, it was paperwork. Hours spent researching the right classifications, making sure every form was filled correctly, double-checking that our descriptions matched our actual products. The kind of work that doesn't make for exciting stories, but matters all the same.
Why bother? Because we've seen what happens when brands don't protect themselves. Because we've put too much work into this bear to let someone else claim it. And because if we're going to build something that lasts, it needs a proper foundation.
Now comes the waiting. Trademark applications in Japan can take months to process, and there's always the possibility of opposition from other parties. But for now, the applications are in, the fees are paid, and we've done what we can.
Fingers crossed, paws together.
