A strong lager where the malt does the talking. Bock is a German style traditionally drunk from winter into spring.
What is a Bock?
It began in the northern German town of Einbeck, and was later reinterpreted in Munich as a bottom-fermented beer — the form we know now. It runs strong, around 6–7% ABV, but the hops stay quiet. Malt is the point. "Bock" is German for billy goat, which is why goats often appear on the label.
Flavour Profile
- Malt sweetness — toasted bread, caramel
- Full-bodied and substantial
- Restrained hop bitterness
- Colour ranges from amber to deep brown
Bock and Doppelbock
"Doppel" means double. More malt, more alcohol, more depth. Doppelbock is said to have been brewed by monks as sustenance during fasting — liquid bread. Freeze it and remove the water and you get an Eisbock, more concentrated again.
Serving Temperature
Don't over-chill it. Around 10–13°C lets the malt open up. Take it out of the fridge and give it a few minutes.
