ブラウンエールとは
イングランド北部のニューカッスル、そして南部のロンドンで、それぞれ違う顔を持って育ちました。北のものは比較的ドライで軽快、南のものは甘みが強く、色も濃い傾向があります。近年はアメリカでホップを効かせた解釈も広がっています。

ポーターとの違い
ポーターはより濃く焙煎した麦芽を使うため、コーヒーやビターチョコに近いロースト感が出ます。ブラウンエールはそこまで焙煎を進めず、ナッツや焼いたパンのあたりで止まる。境目は地続きですが、飲み比べるとロースト感の深さがはっきり違います。
合わせたい料理
ローストビーフ、きのこ料理、熟成したチェダー。秋の食卓によく馴染みます。

What is a Brown Ale?
It grew up with two faces: drier and more brisk in the north of England around Newcastle, sweeter and darker in the south around London. More recently American brewers have hopped it up into a third reading.

How It Differs from a Porter
A Porter uses more heavily roasted malt, so it reaches coffee and bitter chocolate. A Brown Ale stops earlier, around nuts and toasted bread. The boundary is a gradient, but taste them together and the depth of roast separates them clearly.

Roast beef, mushrooms, aged cheddar. It belongs on an autumn table.
