オレンジジュースのような濁りと、ほとばしる果実の香り。ヘイジーIPAは、この十数年でクラフトビールの風景を変えたスタイルです。
ヘイジーIPAとは
正式にはニューイングランドIPA、略してNEIPA。2010年代のアメリカ東海岸で生まれました。従来のIPAが苦味とキレを競っていたのに対し、こちらは香りと口当たりに全振りしています。
なぜ濁るのか
濁りは手抜きではなく、設計です。小麦やオート麦を加えてたんぱく質を増やし、発酵中と発酵後に大量のホップを投入する。この「ドライホッピング」で生まれるホップの油分とたんぱく質が結びつき、あの安定した濁りをつくります。ろ過をしないのも、香りごと残すためです。
味わいの特徴
- マンゴー、パッションフルーツ、桃のような香り
- とろりとした、なめらかな口当たり
- 苦味は驚くほど控えめ

飲むときの注意
香りが命のスタイルなので、鮮度がすべてです。缶や瓶に詰められてから時間が経つほど、あの華やかさは失われます。買ったら早めに、よく冷やして。

What is a Hazy IPA?
Properly, a New England IPA — NEIPA. It emerged on the American east coast in the 2010s. Where earlier IPAs competed on bitterness and snap, this one spends everything on aroma and texture.
Why Is It Cloudy?
The haze is designed, not accidental. Wheat and oats raise the protein content, and enormous quantities of hops go in during and after fermentation. That dry-hopping releases hop oils which bind to the protein, producing a haze that stays put. No filtration, because filtering would strip the aroma too.

One Thing to Know
Aroma is the whole style, and aroma fades. The longer it sits in the can, the less of it there is. Buy it fresh, drink it soon, serve it cold.
