Black, but not heavy. Schwarzbier — German for "black beer" — is a bottom-fermented dark lager.
What is a Schwarzbier?
The style has a long history in Thuringia and Saxony, in eastern Germany. Roasted malt gives it a deep, nearly black colour, but the yeast is lager yeast: a slow, cold fermentation that leaves the beer clean and clear-tasting.
Flavour Profile
- A restrained roast — coffee, bitter chocolate
- The crisp finish you expect from a lager
- Far lighter on the palate than the colour suggests
- Gentle bitterness that doesn't linger
How It Differs from a Stout
The yeast is the real difference. A stout is a top-fermented ale; a Schwarzbier is a bottom-fermented lager. Both are black, but where a stout leans creamy and fruity, a Schwarzbier stays sharp-edged and never turns heavy as you drink.
What to Eat With It
Grilled chicken in a sweet soy glaze, slow-braised pork, smoked cheese. Anything with a little char to it. In Hokkaido, it works with jingisukan.
Summary
If you think you don't like dark beer, this is the one to try. Don't let the colour decide for you. Craft Bear's Black Rock Island is also a dark lager, with roasted notes of coffee and chocolate.
